Motorsport Noise Monitoring

Measure Noise Level and Noise Exposure of Motor Racing

Motorsport environmental noise monitoringConstruction and expansion of racing facilities has followed the exploding popularity of Motorsports. The increase in facilities and events has exposed many more spectators and communities to the ever present noise that that accompanies these venues.

The noise generated by motorsports is part of the expected experience, however it can be a significant complaint for neighboring communities and it can present the danger of hearing loss to employees and spectators.

Today motorsport venues from around the world are implementing Larson Davis noise measurement and noise monitoring systems to aid their noise management planning in order to:

  • Protect the hearing of employees and spectators
  • Monitor the noise sources under static and racing conditions
  • Understand the community response to existing or proposed noise sources
  • Evaluate noise abatement efforts
  • Measure compliance with local noise requirements
  • Avoid Litigation

Applications

  • Motorsport Noise Monitoring
  • Racetrack Noise Monitoring
  • Raceway Noise monitoring
  • Motor Cross Noise Monitoring

Static Vehicle Noise Assessment

Static vehicle measurements are often used to document each vehicle’s noise levels at a specific engine speed or rpm while stationary. Typically a measurement is taken using standards such as ISO 5130 which describes methods for making exhaust peak noise level measurements. Larson Davis offers Sound Level Meters to make these measurements and do the analysis that may be required.

Race Track Noise Monitoring

Very often permanent or portable noise monitoring systems are placed at locations around the race track, on pit row, and in the surrounding community to measure noise levels and exposure under race conditions. Larson Davis provides several  Noise Monitoring Options for this noise that includes time weighting, time averaging, and real-time communication to the operations control station. Noise events that exceed pre-determined limits can be tagged, saved, and correlated to specific vehicles or events at the track. Real-time alerts can be emailed or texted.

Racing Noise Exposure

High levels of noise exposure are prevalent in many areas around a race track or related venue. The negative effects of exposure to this noise can include hearing damage and physical effects such as irritability, fatigue, and circulatory effects. Motorsports operations are governed by local safety regulations that require actions to be taken based upon the dose level of noise that a team member or worker experiences. By accurately measuring the noise dose or exposure, the proper hearing protection can be specified.

Larson Davis offers the Spartan™ Series of Noise Dosimeters that are wireless, rugged, reliable, affordable, and tamper-proof and they measure to the applicable IEC and ANSI standards. This instrument includes a microphone that is worn on the shoulder and it generally collects noise data for a full shift or racing event to determine the Dose that a racing participant or spectator is experiencing. Connect to your meter and use LD Atlas™ to easily check on the status of your meter, make setup changes for a new measurement, analyze data, listen to recorded audio files, and even create and share PDF reports with your own company logo on them.
